- It runs from $140 on older MacBook Air and Pro models up to several hundred on the current Retina and mini-LED machines, because the panel itself is most of the cost. The price for your exact model is in the table above — match it by the A-number on the underside or in About This Mac.
- Can you replace just the glass on a MacBook, or is it the whole screen?
- The whole display assembly. A MacBook panel is bonded rather than layered, so there is no separate outer glass to swap the way there sometimes is on a phone. Anyone offering glass-only on a Mac is worth a second question.
- What is Flexgate, and is that what my MacBook has?
- Flexgate is a display cable fault on 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pros, where the cable chafes as the lid opens and closes. The signs are stage lighting along the bottom edge of the picture, or the display cutting out when the lid passes about halfway. It is a cable repair, not a panel, and it costs considerably less — which is why it is worth checking before you pay for a screen.
- My MacBook screen is black but I can hear it running — is that the display?
- Shine a torch close to the panel. A faint visible image means the display is working and the backlight has failed, which is a different and cheaper repair. No image at all under a torch points at the panel or the board, and the free diagnosis separates the two.
- Which MacBook models do you replace screens on?

- No. Replacing a display does not touch the drive — nothing is wiped and nothing is reinstalled. Back up before any repair as a habit, but this job does not put your data at risk.

Before you price a panel, check whether you actually need one. Three different faults look identical from the front and only one of them is a broken screen — and the other two cost considerably less to put right.
A MacBook display is a bonded assembly, so a crack means a new panel; there is no glass-only repair on a Mac the way there sometimes is on a phone. But a dark band at the bottom of the picture, or an image that cuts out at a certain lid angle, is usually a cable rather than a panel. We check before quoting, and the check is free.
Is It Actually the Screen?
Four minutes with the machine tells us which of these you have, and the difference between them is a few hundred dollars.
- Shine a torch close to the display. If you can make out a faint image, the panel is alive and the backlight has failed. Different repair, and a cheaper one.
- Move the lid slowly through its full range. If the picture flickers, dies or returns at a particular angle, the display cable running through the hinge is chafing. On 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pros this is Flexgate, and it is a cable job.
- Look for stage lighting along the bottom edge. Uneven pools of brightness at the base of the picture are the same cable starting to go. Caught early it stays a cable. Left long enough the backlight fails completely.
- Plug in an external monitor. Perfect external picture means the machine and the graphics are fine and the fault is in the lid. A wrong external picture points at the board instead.

Why MacBook Screen Prices Vary So Much
The spread on the table above is wide, and it is not arbitrary. An older MacBook Air takes a panel that is still widely made. A current 14-inch MacBook Pro takes a mini-LED display assembly that costs multiples of it, and on the Retina machines the panel, the glass and the lid are bonded into one unit that is replaced together.
So the honest answer to "what does a MacBook screen cost" is that it depends entirely on which MacBook, which is why the price for every model we handle is listed above rather than averaged into a headline figure. How Long Does a MacBook Screen Replacement Take?
The work itself is not the long part. What sets the timing is the panel: we order against your exact model, and once it is here the machine is usually back with you the same day. We give you a realistic timing when we quote rather than a number we cannot keep.
Your files are not touched by a display replacement. Nothing is wiped and nothing is reinstalled. Back up first anyway — backing up a MacBook before a repair is ten minutes and worth doing before any machine leaves your hands.
Is It Worth Replacing a MacBook Screen?
On anything from the last five years, usually yes — a display is a fraction of what the machine is worth and the rest of it is untouched. On an older Air or Pro the sum gets closer, and if the panel is the third thing to go we will tell you so rather than take the job.
What tips it is whether the machine is otherwise sound. A 2020 MacBook Pro with a cracked lid and a healthy battery is worth fixing without much thought.
