What a Battery Replacement Involves

A phone battery is a sealed lithium cell glued into the case, usually under the screen or behind the back panel. Replacing it means opening the device with controlled heat, releasing the adhesive without bending the cell, fitting a new one, and testing that the device charges and holds properly before it goes back to you. On most handsets that happens while you wait. Your data stays where it is, because a battery swap does not involve wiping the device.

How Do I Know If My Phone Needs a New Battery?

Three signs are reliable enough to act on, and one of them counts for more than the other two.

The shape of the discharge changes. A healthy battery falls steadily from full to empty. A worn one clings near the top, then drops in a rush somewhere through the middle. If your phone sits at 80% all morning and collapses to nothing by lunch, that is the classic pattern.

It shuts down with charge still showing. This is the clearest signal there is. The cell can no longer deliver current under load, so the phone cuts out at 30% or 40%, often when it is cold or working hard. A battery doing this will not recover.

It runs hot while charging when it did not before. Heat is both a cause and a symptom of a worn cell.

On some devices you can check the number directly. iPhone reports it under Settings, Battery, Battery Health, and below about 80% capacity a replacement makes a real difference. Battery prices vary far less between models than screens do, which makes this one of the more predictable repairs to budget for. Original Grade or Grade AAA: Which Should You Pick?

We carry more than one grade on many models, and we tell you which is going in before you agree.

Original Grade is the default and what we would recommend for a device you plan to keep. It holds its rated capacity properly and ages the way you would expect.

Grade AAA costs less and suits an older handset where you want another year out of it rather than another three. It is a sensible choice on a phone near the end of its life and a false economy on a current one.

A Swollen Battery Is Urgent

If the screen has started lifting at one edge, the back panel is separating, or the device rocks when you lay it flat on a table, that is a swollen cell pushing from underneath. Stop charging it, stop using it if you can, and bring it in.

People usually read this as a screen problem, because the screen is the visible part. It is not. A swollen lithium cell can crack the display from behind, and it is a fire risk if punctured. Do not press the screen back down, and do not try to prise the cell out yourself.

Common Battery Problems We Repair

• Drops from 40% straight to nothing. A worn cell, and the most common battery job we do.
• Shuts down with charge still showing. The cell cannot deliver current under load. Replacement is the fix.
• Charges to a fixed percentage and stops. Either a worn cell or a charge-limit setting left switched on. We check the free cause first.
• Hot while charging and gaining very little. Battery or charging circuit, so worth a free diagnosis before replacing anything.
• Screen lifting at one edge, or the device rocks on a table. A swollen battery. Bring it in promptly.
• Dies in cold air conditioning but recovers indoors. A classic sign of a cell near the end of its life.
• Fine on charge, dead the moment you unplug. Usually a cell that has failed outright rather than partially.

How Long Does It Take, and Will I Lose My Data?

Most phone battery replacements take about 45 to 90 minutes when we have the cell for your model in stock, and you are welcome to wait. Tablets and laptops take longer, because there is more adhesive and more to dismantle, and we will give you a realistic timing when we quote rather than a number we cannot keep to.
