There are only two price bands, and which one you land in comes down to a single question: is your lid touch or not. A non-touch panel is a bare LCD that unclips from the lid. A touch panel is glass bonded to the display, replaced as one assembly, and that bonding is most of the difference in cost.

Is It Actually the Screen?

Check this before you pay for a panel, because three different faults look identical from the outside and only one of them needs a screen.

  • Hold a torch close to the display. If you can make out a faint image, the panel is alive and the backlight has failed. That is a different, usually cheaper repair.
  • Move the lid slowly through its range. If the picture flickers, cuts out or comes back at a particular angle, the display cable running through the hinge is chafed. Cheaper than a panel, and missed often enough to be worth naming.
  • Plug in an external monitor. If the external picture is perfect, the machine and the graphics are fine and the fault is in the lid. If the external is also wrong, the problem is on the board.

We check all three before quoting. It is a five-minute job and it regularly saves people the cost of a panel they did not need.

Glass Only, or the Whole Panel?

On a phone you can sometimes replace just the glass. On a laptop you generally cannot, and anyone offering to is worth a second question. Non-touch laptop displays are a single LCD unit — there is no separate outer glass to swap. Touch displays do have glass, but it is bonded to the panel underneath, and separating them reliably is not a repair anyone should sell you.

So the honest answer for a laptop is that a cracked screen means a new panel. What we can do is make sure it is the right panel, at the right refresh rate and resolution, rather than the cheapest thing that physically fits — a mismatched panel will run, and it will look wrong every day afterwards.
