That means a lot of Latitudes three or four years into their life, at exactly the point where the battery has stopped holding and the hinge has started to complain. It also means a steady run of XPS machines whose owners are hoping the answer is a cheap panel rather than a board.

Common Dell Faults, and What They Usually Turn Out to Be

• Inspiron and Vostro hinges tearing out of the lid. The hinge is bolted into plastic bosses moulded into the lid. Those crack, and once they do the hinge starts levering the bezel away every time you open the machine. You will hear it before you see it. Caught early it is a hinge job; left alone it cracks the panel and becomes a screen job as well.
• XPS batteries swelling under the trackpad. Common on the thin XPS 13 and 15 chassis once the cell is a few years old. The tell is a trackpad that has stopped clicking evenly, or a laptop that rocks on a flat table. Stop charging it and bring it in — a swollen cell can crack the base from the inside.
• XPS not charging at all. Modern XPS charges over USB-C only, and that port is soldered to the board. So on an XPS this is board-level work rather than a jack swap, which is worth knowing before anyone quotes you for a part that does not exist on your model.
• Latitude charging at one angle only. The older business range uses a barrel jack, and that jack is the part that gives out first because it takes the strain every time the cable is pulled. Test the charger on another machine first — a failed adapter is the cheaper of the two and costs nothing to rule out.
• Alienware and G Series running hot and loud. Dust packs into the fin stack and the thermal paste dries out. The machine throttles itself slow long before it fails outright, so people put up with it for months. A clean and a repaste usually gives the performance back.
• Backlight gone, machine clearly still running. You can hear the fan, the keyboard lights up, and a torch held against the screen shows a faint image. That is the backlight circuit or the display cable, not the whole panel.

What Happens When You Bring a Dell In

1. Send the model number. Message it with a photo of the fault and we can usually tell you what it is and roughly what it costs before you travel.
2. Free diagnosis. We find the actual fault before quoting. It is often the cheaper of the two things it could be, and you should know that before you pay for either.
3. One nett quote. The number we give you is the number at collection. If you would rather not go ahead, the diagnosis still costs nothing.
4. The repair. Laptop parts are ordered against your exact model, so we give you a realistic timing when we quote rather than a number we cannot keep to.
5. Tested, then warranty. We check the repair works before handing it back, and it leaves with a 30-100 days warranty honoured at any of our branches.

Parts and Warranty on Dell Repairs

Dell runs no parts programme for independent repairers in Singapore, so what we fit is Original Grade or a quality equivalent, and we name the grade in the quote before you agree to anything. Anyone promising you factory parts for an out-of-warranty Dell is telling you a story. Our work carries a 30-100 days warranty under our own service terms, and there is more on what the grades mean under parts quality grades.

If your machine is still inside its Dell warranty and the fault appeared on its own — nothing dropped, nothing spilled — take it to Dell Singapore support first. That repair may cost you nothing, and we would rather tell you than take the job. Accidental damage, liquid and a battery worn out after three or four years are not covered by any manufacturer warranty at any age. That is the gap we fill.
