There are two kinds of recovery and they cost differently because they are different work. Software-level recovery is for a drive that still works — files deleted, a partition lost, Windows that will not boot, a corrupted file system. Hardware-level recovery is for a drive or a machine that has failed physically, and it starts by getting the storage talking again at all.

Stop Doing These Three Things First

  1. Stop writing to the drive. Every time Windows boots it writes, and every write can land on the space your deleted files still occupy. If the data matters, power the machine down and leave it down.
  2. Do not run recovery software onto the same drive. Installing a recovery tool onto the drive you are recovering from is the most common way people destroy the thing they were trying to save.
  3. Do not keep power-cycling a drive that clicks or is not detected. A mechanical drive making noise is failing while you listen to it. Repeated attempts turn a recoverable disk into a lost one.

None of that is a sales pitch. It is the difference between a straightforward recovery and an expensive one.

Software-Level or Hardware-Level?

Software-level applies when the drive is healthy and the problem is logical: files deleted by accident, a partition that vanished, a Windows install that will not start, a file system that got corrupted by a bad shutdown. The drive is readable, so the work is in reconstructing what should be on it. This is the cheaper of the two.

Hardware-level applies when the drive or the laptop has failed physically: a dead motherboard, a drive that is not detected at all, a clicking mechanical disk, liquid damage, an SSD whose controller has failed. The work starts with getting the storage readable before any files can be pulled off, and what it costs depends on the storage device, the condition of the board and how severe the fault is.

What We Cannot Promise

Nobody honest promises a recovery before looking, and anyone who does is selling. What we can promise is that we will tell you what we find, what it will cost, and what the realistic odds are before you commit to anything.

A few real limits. An SSD that has been TRIMmed after deletion has usually erased the data at the flash level, and no software brings that back. A drive with physical platter damage may give up some files and not others. And an encrypted drive without its key or recovery password is not recoverable by anyone, including us — that is what the encryption is for.

Once your files are back, take the two minutes to set up a backup. It is the cheapest repair on this page and the only one that prevents the others.

My hard drive is clicking. Should I keep trying?

Can you recover data from an SSD?
Often, but with an honest caveat. If files were deleted and Windows has since run TRIM, the data is usually erased at the flash level and no software recovers it. If the SSD has failed as a device — controller fault, not detected, dead laptop — that is hardware-level work and the odds are much better. Can you recover an encrypted drive?
Only with the key or recovery password. A BitLocker or otherwise encrypted drive without its credentials is not recoverable by anyone, and that is exactly what the encryption is for. Find the recovery key first — for BitLocker it is usually saved to your Microsoft account.
