What Usually Turns Out to Be a Board Fault

  • Dead. No lights, no fan, no response. Test the charger on another machine first, because a failed adapter looks exactly like a dead laptop and costs nothing to rule out.
  • Will not charge, and the port is fine. On any laptop that charges over USB-C, the port is soldered to the board, so this is board work by definition. Common on Dell XPS, Samsung Galaxy Book, MateBook and thin ASUS and HP models.
  • Powers on, no display, external monitor also blank. If the external is blank too, the fault is on the board rather than in the lid.
  • Shuts down under load, or restarts on its own. Power delivery on the board, sometimes thermal.
  • Liquid damage. Corrosion spreads across the board for as long as the residue sits there. This is the one where the delay costs more than the accident.
  • USB ports or the trackpad dead together. Several things failing at once usually points at one thing upstream on the board.
