• It dies early. The Mac shuts down at 20–30%, or drops from "plenty left" to nothing in minutes.
• A swollen battery. The trackpad clicks oddly or sits raised, the case bulges, or the Mac rocks on the desk. Stop using it and bring it in — a swollen battery is a safety issue.
• High cycle count. Most MacBook batteries are rated for around 1,000 cycles. Past that, capacity falls off.
• It only runs when plugged in. Unplug it and it dies instantly.
