When Should You Change an iPad Battery?

Change it when the iPad no longer gets through a normal day of light use, when it shuts down with charge still showing, or when the screen starts lifting at one edge. The first two are wear. The third is a swollen battery, and that one can't wait.

There's no battery percentage to check first. iPadOS doesn't have the Battery Health screen an iPhone has: open Settings, then Battery, and you get the charge level and a usage graph, nothing more. Apple rates iPad batteries for around 1,000 full charge cycles, so an iPad charged most days for four or five years is usually there.

What to Do If a Swollen Battery Is Lifting Your iPad Screen

A swollen battery pushes the display up from underneath, so the first sign is a gap along one edge or a corner that catches a fingernail. Don't press it back down and don't glue it. The swelling is gas from a cell that has broken down inside, and it doesn't go away.

Stop charging the iPad, keep it somewhere cool and bring it in. Left alone, it keeps lifting until the glass cracks or the display cable tears, and a battery job becomes a battery and iPad screen replacement job. Caught early, it's just the battery.

How Long Does It Take to Change an iPad Battery?

Most iPad battery replacements take about 60 to 120 minutes. An iPad is slower than a phone because there's no back cover to open. The battery sits under the display, the display is held down by adhesive along its whole edge, and the battery itself is glued to the frame. Both come away with heat and patience rather than force. Lifting a bonded screen is the careful part of the job, most of all on the thin laminated displays of the iPad Air, iPad mini and iPad Pro. If the glass is already cracked, or swelling has already stretched the display cable, we'll show you before we start, because then the screen may need doing too and you should see the full price first.

Original Grade or High-Capacity: Which iPad Battery Should You Choose?

Most people choose the Original Grade battery, from $35. It's built to the same specification and capacity as the battery your iPad shipped with, so you get back the runtime it had when it was new. For most models we can also fit a high-capacity iPad battery, from $50, a larger cell for people who want more than the original runtime.

iPad isn't part of Apple's Independent Repair Provider programme, so Original Grade and high-capacity are the two batteries we fit. Whichever you pick, the grade is named on your quote before you agree.

Is It Worth Changing an iPad Battery or Buying a New iPad?

For most iPads, yes. The battery is the part that wears out, and the screen, storage and chip around it are usually fine. Our rule of thumb: if the repair costs less than half what the same iPad sells for second-hand in good condition, change the battery.

Two cases deserve a second thought. An iPad that no longer gets iPadOS updates (check Settings, then General, then Software Update) will keep losing app support however good its battery is. And an iPad still under AppleCare+ should go to Apple, which replaces batteries that have worn below its own threshold.
