The glass is shattered, but everything under it looks normal. That's the cheaper iPad screen repair: we take off the broken glass and bond on new glass, and your display stays where it is. On an iPad 9th generation, for example, new glass is $60 against $100 for a full iPad screen replacement, so it's worth knowing which one you need.

When Is New Glass Enough for a Cracked iPad Screen?

When the picture under the cracks is clean. Set a plain white wallpaper and look for dark patches, ink-like blots that spread, or coloured lines. If there are none, the display is fine and new glass fixes the iPad.

On a standard iPad and an older iPad mini, the touch layer is built into the glass. So a strip that won't respond, or taps the iPad makes on its own, is still a glass repair on those models. If the picture itself is damaged, you need the full screen instead, and we'll show you why at the free check before you pay.

Which iPads Can Have Just the Glass Replaced?

It's simplest on the iPads where glass and display are separate parts: the standard iPad from the 5th generation to the 10th, the first iPad Air, and the iPad mini 1 to 3. On these, the glass comes off and the display underneath isn't disturbed.

On the iPad Air 2 and later, the iPad mini 4 and later, and every iPad Pro, the glass is laminated to the display. We still price glass-only on many of them, and when the panel underneath is undamaged it saves real money. But separating the two is delicate work, so whether your display is a good candidate is decided at the check. If it isn't, we quote the full screen instead, before anything starts. What Does an iPad Glass Replacement Involve?

The broken glass is held to the frame by adhesive all the way round. We warm it, lift it away without letting shards drop onto the display, clean the frame, and bond in new glass with fresh adhesive. On iPads with a Home button, Touch ID is paired to your iPad's own button, so the original button moves across to the new glass.

Most iPad glass replacements take about 60 to 120 minutes, with time for the adhesive to set before we test touch across the whole screen. If yours needs longer, we'll tell you when we quote.

Is It Safe to Keep Using an iPad With Cracked Glass?

For a short while. The cracks spread each time the case flexes, splinters catch fingers (kids' iPads are the ones we worry about), and broken glass no longer keeps moisture out. The bigger risk is pressure: a hard press on cracked glass can damage the display underneath, and then a glass repair becomes a full screen. A clear screen protector over the crack is a fair stopgap until you can bring it in.
