One thing to know about home buttons. On iPads with Touch ID, the fingerprint sensor is paired to the logic board at the factory. A replacement button brings back the click, but not the fingerprint unlock. If Touch ID matters to you, ask us before you book and we'll explain the options for your model.

How do I find out which iPad I have?

iPads look alike, and the price depends on the exact model, so check before you message us. Open Settings, then General, then About, and read the Model Name line. That gives you something like "iPad Air (5th generation)" or "iPad Pro 12.9-inch (6th generation)".

If the iPad won't turn on, look at the back. The small print near the bottom includes a model number that starts with A, such as A2588. Send us that number or a photo of the back and we'll match it to the right price. People often guess wrong between a 10.2-inch and a 10.9-inch iPad, or between Pro generations, and the screens aren't interchangeable.

Why does the same repair cost more on some iPads?

Three things move the price.

Lamination. On the standard iPad and the older iPad mini, the glass sits on top of the display as a separate part. On the iPad Air 2 and later, the iPad mini 4 and later, and every iPad Pro, the glass is bonded to the display. Bonded screens look better and cost more to fix, because separating the layers is slow, careful work.

Size and panel. A 12.9-inch Pro panel is a bigger, higher-spec part than a mini's. The Pro's Face ID module is a repair the base iPad doesn't have at all.

How new it is. Parts for the newest iPad Pro and iPad Air cost more and are harder to source at first, which is why the newest models show "on quote" on our price list rather than a figure. Message us your model and we'll confirm the price and the part.

What about battery, charging and water damage?

Battery. If the iPad drains in an afternoon, shuts off at 20%, or the screen is lifting at one edge, it's the battery. The lifting screen is the urgent one, because a swelling cell can crack the display from underneath. Our guide to changing an iPad battery covers how to check yours first.

Charging. Before you pay for a port, rule out the cable, the adapter and lint packed into the port. Plenty of the "broken" ports we see turn out to be packed with pocket fluff. The iPad not charging guide walks through it.

Water. Turn the iPad off and leave it off. Don't charge it to "see if it works", because that's what turns corrosion into a short. The chemical wash is $45, and whatever it uncovers underneath gets diagnosed and quoted before any more work is done.

Is it worth repairing an iPad?

Most of the time, yes. A glass, battery or charging-port repair costs a small fraction of a new iPad, and you keep your setup and your data.

Our rule of thumb: if the repair is less than half what the same iPad sells for second-hand in good condition, fix it. If it's more, look at trade-in instead. Two cases are worth thinking about before you pay:

• An old iPad that no longer gets iPadOS updates. Repairs are cheap, but apps drop support over time. Check in Settings, under General, then Software Update.
• A Pro that needs a full display plus something else. The repair is still usually well below a new Pro, but get the whole quote before deciding.

How long do iPad repairs take?

Most screen and battery jobs take about 60 to 120 minutes. iPads are slower than phones because the screen is held down by adhesive along its whole edge. Buttons, cameras and charging ports are usually quicker. Board-level and water damage work takes longer and is timed after diagnosis.
