What is ghost touch, exactly?

The touch layer of your screen (the digitizer) reports touches that never happened. Apps open themselves. The keyboard types strings of letters. The screen scrolls while the phone lies flat on a table. It tends to start as an occasional twitch and grow into a phone you can't trust.

And it's worth taking seriously beyond the annoyance. A phone that taps itself can call people, send half-written messages, and worst of all, enter wrong passcodes until iOS locks you out with an "iPhone Unavailable" screen. If your phone is ghost-touching at night, switch it off before you sleep; that's not superstition, it's how people wake up locked out.

What causes an iPhone to tap itself?

• Drop damage. The most common cause. The digitizer or its connector was hurt in a fall, even one that left no visible crack. Ghost touch appearing days after a drop is still the drop.

• A poorly seated screen. Even a good panel causes ghost touch if the connector isn't seated cleanly or the frame is bent enough to press on the display edge.
• Moisture. Water conducts; a damp screen edge or liquid inside the phone registers as touches. If the phone got wet recently, read what to do in the first 30 minutes after water damage.
• Dirt, sweat or a damaged screen protector. The cheap fix. A protector cracked at the edge, or grime along the bezel, triggers touches at the same screen spot repeatedly.
• Charging interference. Some phones ghost-touch only while plugged into a cheap charger or cable; poor grounding makes the touch layer misread. If it only happens on the cable, swap the charger before blaming the screen.

Which fixes should I try before paying anything?

1. Clean the screen properly. Power off, wipe with a slightly damp lint-free cloth, dry, and pay attention to the edges where grime collects.
2. Take the screen protector off. Especially if it's cracked, lifting at a corner, or was applied with bubbles. Test bare for a day.
3. Restart, then update iOS. Rare, but touch-driver bugs exist and get patched.
4. Change charger and cable. If ghost touch only happens while charging, the accessory is the fault, not the phone.
5. Note the pattern. Same spot every time points at localised digitizer damage or protector damage there. Random everywhere suggests the connector or panel as a whole. Either way, that observation shortens the diagnosis.
