Where to repair an iPhone in Singapore depends on two things: whether Apple still covers it, and what's broken. My iPhone is still under warranty or AppleCare+. Where should I go?

Go to Apple first. If the fault is covered, nobody else can fix it on Apple's account, and with AppleCare+ even accidental damage costs you a fixed service fee rather than the full repair. Singapore has Apple Stores on Orchard Road, at Marina Bay Sands and in Jewel at Changi Airport, and Apple also works through Authorised Service Providers. Book through the Apple Support app or Apple's website, which shows both.

Out of warranty with a cracked screen or a tired battery?

This is where you have the most choice, and where it pays to get two quotes. Apple will still do the repair at its out-of-warranty price. An independent repairer under the Apple IRP programme can fit a genuine Apple display or battery on eligible iPhones too, and usually also offers a cheaper Original Grade part if the genuine one isn't worth it to you.

I need it fixed today. Where can I go?

An independent shop with walk-in hours. Apple's Genius Bar runs on booked appointments, and slots can be a few days out, especially at weekends and in the weeks after a new iPhone launches.

Walk-in doesn't mean guaranteed, though. A shop can only finish the job today if it has the part for your model on the shelf. So message or call before you travel, give the exact model and the fault, and ask two things: is the part in stock, and roughly how long will it take. It's been in water, or it won't turn on. Who can fix that?

Look for a shop that does board-level work on site. These faults live on the logic board, and the useful question is whether the shop can find and fix the actual fault rather than replace parts until something works. Apple generally doesn't repair logic boards at component level, so for liquid damage its answer is usually a replacement device at a fixed fee.

Ask any shop whether board work is done in-house or sent out, and whether the diagnosis is free. Ours is free, and liquid and board jobs are quoted after it, because two phones with the same symptom can have very different faults. It's an older iPhone. Is anywhere still repairing it?

Yes, though maybe not Apple. Apple stops hardware service on models it classes as obsolete, and for older "vintage" models it repairs only while parts last. Independent repairers keep fitting parts long after that. We still price batteries and screens for iPhones going back to the 6.

I'm selling or trading it in soon. Does it matter where?

It can. On recent iPhones, Settings → General → About shows a Parts and Service History, which lists whether the screen, battery or camera is a genuine Apple part. A buyer or a trade-in counter may look at it. A genuine Apple part fitted by Apple, or under the Apple IRP programme, shows as genuine there. A non-Apple part shows as unknown, even when it works perfectly.

What's the difference between an Apple Authorised Service Provider and an independent repairer?

An Authorised Service Provider does warranty and AppleCare+ work on Apple's behalf, under Apple's own rules and prices. An independent repairer under the Apple IRP programme buys genuine parts, tools and training from Apple for out-of-warranty repairs, sets its own prices, and can offer other part grades alongside the genuine ones.
