Is It Just the Back Glass, or Something Else Too?

Look at the phone side-on and from behind before you come in. Four different repairs can follow a drop, and only one of them is back glass.

• Cracked or shattered glass, frame straight. The back glass job on this page. The phone sits flat on a table and the edges of the frame are clean.

• Cracked camera lens covers. The small glass discs over the cameras are a separate part from the back panel. If only those are cracked and photos are fine, see iPhone camera lens repair. If photos are blurry or the camera won't focus after the drop, that's the rear camera itself.
• Back glass bulging outward with no drop at all. That's not a cracked back, it's a swelling battery pushing the glass out from inside. Stop charging the phone and bring it in. The fix is an iPhone battery replacement, and it shouldn't wait.

How Is iPhone Back Glass Replaced?

On the iPhone 8 through the 14, Apple bonds the rear glass straight onto the frame, right over the wireless charging coil. It doesn't unclip. We separate the old glass by laser, lift it off in pieces, clean the frame of adhesive and shards, and fit the new panel. That's how we replace just the back glass instead of moving everything into a new housing, which is a bigger and dearer job.

The wireless charging coil and the MagSafe magnets sit under the glass, and a careful repair leaves them exactly where they were. Wireless charging and MagSafe should work just as before, and it's worth trying your own charger at the counter before you leave.

Grade AAA or Genuine Apple Back Glass?

Both give you a whole back again. The difference is who made the panel and what it costs.

• Grade AAA back glass, from $40. A quality aftermarket panel in your model's colours. For a phone you plan to keep using, it's the sensible choice, and it's what most people take.
• Genuine Apple back glass, from $220, fitted under the Apple IRP programme on eligible iPhones. This is the part Apple made, with the factory finish. It makes sense if you're selling the phone soon or simply want the original.

Can You Keep Using an iPhone With Cracked Back Glass?

For a while, yes. The phone works the same with a cracked back. But three things get worse the longer it's left.

• Shards. Cracked glass sheds tiny splinters, into your pocket and your fingers. A case hides the crack but doesn't stop that.
• Dust and moisture. A cracked back no longer seals, so sweat, rain and pocket dust can work their way in towards the board.
• Value. A cracked back takes money off what the phone is worth on resale or trade-in, often more than the repair costs.

One honest note: once an iPhone has been opened, by anyone, it shouldn't be treated as water resistant any more. That's true after a back glass replacement and it's true of a cracked back too.

How Long Does iPhone Back Glass Replacement Take?

Most are done the same day, usually within one to two hours once we start. Back glass takes longer than a screen because the old glass has to be separated and the frame cleaned before the new panel goes on.
